Key Insights

Materials and soil anchor the index

regenerative materials/homewares leads with 20 shops, ahead of seeds & home growing (15) and composting & bokashi (14). European regenerative commerce spans both living soil and durable material cycles.

United Kingdom is the largest single market

United Kingdom leads with 22 verified shops (29% of the index), followed by Germany (11), France (6), and Austria (5).

Regenerative extends far beyond food

The regenerative materials category (20 shops) spans linen, wool, hemp, cork, and recycled fibres — showing that regenerative principles apply to homewares and textiles, not just food.

Fermentation is thriving across borders

With 8 shops selling fermentation cultures across 7 countries, the European fermentation renaissance is real. Kombucha (3) and kefir (3) are the most common sub-categories.

Significant growth opportunity

We cover 20 countries, but 11 EU member states — including Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic — still have no verified shops in our index. The regenerative commerce landscape is wide open for growth.

Methodology

How shops are selected

Every shop in this index meets Grown.’s regenerative criteria — not merely “sustainable” or “eco-friendly.” A shop qualifies when its core products actively restore soil, biodiversity, or material cycles. Growing mushrooms on coffee grounds. Breeding composting worms. Fermenting living cultures. Weaving with regeneratively farmed wool.

Vetting process

Each listing is backed by documented desk research: we read the shop’s website, check stated practices and certifications (Demeter, GOTS, B Corp, EcoCert, and others where they exist), and publish the evidence alongside each listing. No shop pays for inclusion. No shop is an affiliate link. Trust is the product.

Data collection period

This report is based on data collected and verified in July 2026. The index is continuously updated as new shops are vetted.

Limitations

  • This index is focused on independently operated European shops — major retailers and large e-commerce platforms are excluded by design.
  • Coverage is strongest in United Kingdom and the German-speaking countries; other regions may be under-represented.
  • The index is not exhaustive. Many excellent regenerative shops are not yet listed.
  • Category counts reflect how shops self-categorise and may overlap.
